No. Plus Teen USA is a single event pageant. The titleholder who wins the National title maintains the title of Plus Teen USA throughout the year.
A platform is a community concern that is close to your heart. Examples of platforms might include, but certainly are not limited to:
Each contestant must have a platform on which to stand. Platforms are associated with one's purpose in life; something about which one is passionate. If you have not established a platform, then you most likely have not established your purpose. Ask yourself questions like, "What issues are most important to me in today's society?" and "If I can change anything about the world, what would that be?"
Once you have established your platform, contact organizations that support your cause and get sponsorships and support from those organizations. Contact your local media (newspapers, television, etc.), and ask them to do a story on you and your efforts to support this cause through Plus Teen USA. Make sure to let everyone know how you can be contacted for sponsorships and support.
Outside of the obvious costs associated with producing a pageant (the venue, stage, advertisement, trophies, crowns, sashes, professionals, meals, scholarship, etc.), many hours go into the preparation of our Pageant to make it successful. All other expenses, including clothing, hotel, travel, "Plus Teen USA" t-shirt, and some meals, are the responsibility of the contestant and/or her parent(s).
Plus Teen
Inasmuch as pageantry is extremely rewarding, let’s face it, it can become costly. Although not required to be new,
some may find it necessary to purchase an evening gown, casual outfit and business attire. In addition to the
pageantry fee, oftentimes hotel, meals and travel expenses are involved not only for the contestants, but for
accompanying parents and well-wishing relatives and friends, as well.
We recommend that our contestants sell as many advertisements and solicit as many sponsors as possible! We
cannot express to you enough about the value of soliciting support from the community, family, friends and well-
wishers. By all means, do not forget to target businesses associated with your platform. Of course, not everyone
will be able to support you- some folk simply cannot afford to. But I guarantee that if you would put on some
walking shoes, and aggressively market yourself by approaching your neighbors, businesses that you and your
parent frequent, organizations, your relatives, your friends’ parents, pastor, teachers, parents’ co-workers and
others who care about our youth and who want to see you succeed, you can earn your fees in no time.
Here’s how:
1. BE KNOWLEDGABLE- Browse this website thoroughly and read the information contained in your
welcome kit so you can learn all about Plus Teen USA- the competition and the conference- so you will be
equipped to answer any question anyone might have.
2. BE CONFIDENT- Believe in what you are doing and saying. If you do not believe in you or in Plus Teen
traditional pageant, there are height, weight, and even appearance requirements. Few people know what Plus
Teen USA is supposed to look like, so it is your responsibility to show them and to teach them, so REPRESENT!
Keep your head up and take a deep breath of confidence prior to approaching potential sponsors. Speak to them
as though you are doing them the favor by allowing them to be a part of this phenomenal move to celebrate and
restore plus size teens, and not as though they are doing you the favor of supporting you. If you get a "no", do not
stop. (Not everyone says "yes" about anything). If you get a "maybe", let them know when you will contact them
again, and be a person of your word by doing so. If you get a "yes", smile big, and always send a "thank you" card,
thanking them for their support.
everything on hand that you will need in orderly form to secure the sponsorship and/or business advertisements
immediately, including but not limited to the sponsorship information, business advertisement form, the name of
the entity to whom to make checks or money orders payable, etc.
4. BE PERSISTENT- Don't stop until you solicit enough money for everything you need- fees, outfits,
transportation, lodging, meals, jewelry, shoes, make-up, accessories, etc.). Start soliciting sponsors immediately.
The more time you spend on soliciting sponsors, the more money you'll earn.
Although all of us should know what is going on in our world, Plus Teen USA acknowledges that each of us have varying levels of interest with regard to current events. Therefore, because we are more concerned with the passion in each individual's heart, we will not ask current event questions, but are more interested in your heart, and for this reason, each of our contestants is required to stand on a platform; a social cause near and dear to her heart.
Throughout the year, hundreds of thousands of thin girls infiltrate pageant stages across America. We, at Plus Teen USA, believe parents of plus size teens want to see their daughters succeed, shine, and to be fulfilled just as much as parents of thinner teens. Plus size teens make up 30% of the teen population. Therefore, over a period of time, our goal is to be at least 30% as popular as the average pageant for standard size teens. We are full aware that we are up against a great challenge- attempting to enlighten the mind of America about pageantry. However, because we feel that plus size teens are deserving of such an experience, we shall not be moved.
Plus Teen USA Pageant and Conference will be held at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in North Arlington, Texas, located at 825 N Watson Rd.. For more information about the hotel, visit http://www.692.lq.com/. or call 817-640-4142. When making reservations, let the front desk clerk know that you are with Plus Teen USA to receive our discounted rate. Although it would be convenient for contestants to stay at the hotel, it is not a requirement. There are several other hotels and restaurants in the vicinity. Room reservations must be secured two weeks prior to the event in order to receive our discounted rate.
You may submit as many Non-Performance and Photogenic entries as desired, but only one Talent Performance and Swimwear entry. Entry fees for our optional competitions are $30.00 per entry.
Our contestants will be expected to dress moderately and fashionable. No cleavages, over-use of make-up, or skirts shorter than 3" above the knee. Extremely large, dangling earrings and heels that are too high in which to walk comfortably are strongly discouraged. Show us your individual style. Other than these few guidelines, let us see what you're working with. You're the plus teen. You set the standard.
Business Interview- Dress business, casual as though going for a job interview in an office where you will be working with the public. Dresses, skirts, pants, button down shirts, blazers, and capris work fine. No denim.
Opening Act- All contestants will be casually dressed in jean pants, capris, skirts, skorts, or shorts and a pink Plus Teen USA t-shirt.
Casual Wear- Dress as though you are going to school, sporty or other casual function. Fun and lively colors and props are encouraged. (Props okay).
Swim Wear- Cover-ups and props okay.
Evening Wear- Evening wear must be floor-length gowns.
Family and friends are not allowed backstage during the pageant. You will therefore need to come with your hair and make-up already in place and change it between scenes yourself. Obviously, you will not wear your hair in the same style for the casual wear scene as you would for the evening gown competition, so between scene changes are necessary.
All contestants wishing to participate in the "Most Photogenic" competition must submit an 8X10 headshot, along with a $30.00 fee. (This same photo may be used for the Program Book). Submission may be made at the actual event as scheduled. Submissions may also be snail mailed to us in advance. NO EMAILED PHOTOS FOR THE PHOTOGENIC COMPETITION ALLOWED.
